Optical Coherence Tomography, also known as an OCT scan, is a scan of the macular designed to allow for an accurate measurement of the thickness of the central retina (macular).
This measurement allows an ophthalmologist to correctly diagnose a range of eye conditions. An OCT Scan is a common procedure performed at Westside Eye Clinic. This painless and non-invasive test does not touch the eye at all. It is merely an imaging technique that cleverly takes 3D images of the eye.
What conditions can Optical Coherence Tomography help to diagnose?
OCT is a very useful test helping to diagnose a wide range of eye conditions.
These include, but are not limited to, glaucoma, macular hole, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and vitreous traction. The scan also assists with the evaluation of disorders relating to the optic nerve such as glaucoma.
How is an OCT scan performed?
An OCT scan typically takes few minutes and is performed without needing to touch the eye at all.
An ophthalmologist at Westside Eye Clinic may use dilating eye drops to allow the pupil to dilate further to ensure a more accurate examination, however, this will be determined on a case by case basis. If drops are needed, eyes may be sensitive to light after the scan for a few hours. There are no post-operative treatments needed. If you have concerns about your vision or it has been recommended to you by your optometrist to have an Optical Coherence Tomography scan contact Westside Eye Clinic , conveniently located in the Western suburbs of Brisbane.
