If diagnosed early, various non surgical treatments for cataracts can be tried, such as adjusting the prescription of glasses or contact lens and using brighter lighting. However, as the condition progresses, cataract surgery may be required.
Cataract surgery (Phacoemsulsification) is a relatively routine and painless procedure that Westside Eye Clinic performs regularly for those in and around the Brisbane area at a local Day Surgery facility. Dr Park has specialty training and experience in treating complex and technically challenging cases.
How is cataract surgery performed?
Cataract surgery involves the removal of the cloudy lens of the eye (cataract), using a procedure known as phacoemsulsification.
The natural lens is replaced with an artificial one via a small incision. Typically the artificial lens is plastic (intra-ocular lens). This common and safe procedure is performed as day surgery hospital. Whilst patients are typically awake during cataract surgery, a local anaesthetic is administered to ensure the eye is numb and no pain or discomfort is felt.
If it is determined that cataract surgery is required for both eyes, it is usually scheduled a few weeks apart.
The good news is that once a cataract has been removed, the condition will not return. Depending on the individual there may be a need for further maintenance treatment in the future.
After Cataract Removal Surgery
Whilst the side effects of cataract surgery are rare, it is important that patients are aware of things to look out for.
Once the new lens is inserted into the eye, it cannot be felt so if a patient experiences a feeling of pain or pressure inside the eye it should be reported. If vision deteriorates it also should be reported.
Dr. Joseph Park from Westside Eye Clinic will prescribe eye drops to be used for up to 4 weeks post surgery. At this point, it is recommended that a new prescription glasses be organised so that optimal vision is achieved.
